48 Hours in Porto: What's Actually On (14–16 Aug 2026)

Portugal's biggest bike race, the Volta a Portugal, finishes on Avenida dos Aliados on Sun 16 Aug — free, chaotic, brilliant. Before that: baile funk at Maus Hábitos on Friday and free open-air cinema both nights. Here's the plan.

Friday evening

Land, drop bags, head for the Batalha end of town — everything tonight happens within 15 minutes of it.

Eat first at Casa Guedes on Praça dos Poveiros (£): order the sande de pernil, the roast pork sandwich they've been doing for decades, and eat it standing if the terrace is full. It's a 3-minute walk from tonight's main venue.

The main event is Batidão Baile Funk com Pyrats e Kebraku — Maus Hábitos, Fri 14 Aug, 23:59, €8 (tickets). Brazilian baile funk from the resident crew, fourth floor of a converted 1940s garage on Rua de Passos Manuel. One catch: tickets are only sold at the door, so don't turn up at 2am assuming you'll stroll in — it's a small room.

Doors aren't until midnight, so fill the gap. Want something you can only do in Portugal? I'd take the fado — the 7.30pm session lands you back at Maus Hábitos with time for a beer. Saturday

Morning: junk and porcelain

Feira de Antiguidades e Velharias — Praça Velásquez, Sat 15 Aug, 8am–6pm, Free (details). Porto's monthly antiques fair: coins, azulejo tiles, furniture nobody can fit in a Ryanair bag, and paintings of ships. Go before 11am while the dealers are still laying out. It's a 30-minute walk east of Aliados or ten minutes on the 401 bus — treat the walk as your hangover cure.

Afternoon: Serralves

Jenny Holzer: Wrong Answers — Museu de Serralves, open Sat 15 Aug, 10am, €24 full ticket (tickets). Holzer's LED text works in Siza's white museum, and the same ticket gets you The Century of Gehry — Serralves, Ala Álvaro Siza, Sat 15 Aug, included in the €24 ticket (details), plus the park and the treetop walk. €24 stings, but it's genuinely half a day. Bus 203 from Casa da Música gets you there in 15 minutes.

Back in town, eat the francesinha at Café Santiago on Rua de Passos Manuel (££): the meat-stuffed, cheese-covered, beer-sauce sandwich Porto is smug about, and rightly. The queue is real — go at 6pm, not 8pm.

Evening: film first, then dance

Flow – À Deriva — Largo do Amor de Perdição, Sat 15 Aug, 9.30pm, Free (details). The Oscar-winning cat animation, outdoors on the square behind the Clérigos tower. Bring a jumper; the Atlantic shows up after dark even in August.

Still standing afterwards? Ultra Retro Revival — Blanco Club, Sat 15 Aug, 11.55pm–6am, €10 pre-sale / €15 door (tickets) is six hours of retro anthems out towards Senhora da Hora. It's a €10 taxi each way because nothing useful runs at 4am — buy the €10 pre-sale and you've paid for the ride out.

Sunday

This is why you booked the weekend. 87.ª Volta a Portugal, stage 10 finish — Avenida dos Aliados, Sun 16 Aug, racing from 10am, finish around 4.15pm, Free (details). The final stage of Portugal's grand tour: 124 km from Maia, over the Douro bridges, through the historic centre, sprint finish on the city's grandest avenue. Locals line the barriers three deep. Claim a spot on the Aliados pavement by 3pm, or watch the peloton cross the bridges from the Ribeira side earlier and walk up.

Lunch two minutes off the finishing straight at Conga on Rua do Bonjardim (£): bifanas — spicy pork in a bun — since 1976. Two of those and a glass of red is under €10.

If cycling isn't your thing, Vizinhanças — Praça do Marquês, Sun 16 Aug, 10am–3pm, Free (details) is a neighbourhood festival of music, theatre and street games ten minutes' walk up from the race route — you can do both before your flight.

If you only do one thing: the Volta a Portugal finish — Avenida dos Aliados, Sun 16 Aug, finish ~4.15pm, Free (details). A national sporting event lands on Porto's front doorstep once a year, and it costs nothing.

The practical bit

Airport to centre: Metro line E (violet) from Francisco Sá Carneiro to Trindade, about 25 minutes, around €2.60 with the rechargeable Andante card. Runs until roughly 1am. A taxi is €20–25 and worth it only after midnight.

Getting around: Everything on this plan except Serralves and Blanco Club is walkable. Porto's hills are not a rumour — the Ribeira-to-Aliados climb earns your francesinha. Metro and buses take the same Andante card.

Weekend budget (ex-flights and bed): the events above total €62 a head at most — €8 baile funk, €20 fado, €24 Serralves, €10 club — and four of the eleven listed are free. Add €35–45 a day for food and drink, €15 of transport, and you're at roughly €150–180 / £130–155 for the whole weekend. Skip Serralves and the clubs and a €50 / £43 weekend is honestly doable.
